Ride leader Tea reports:
While I’ve been riding with the Fridays for three years now, London to Burnham was my first foray into the brave new world of ride leadership. So I was very glad when I arrived at Fridays Central for the meetup to start the ride and found a healthy group there, totalling 27 in the end. The end of Critical Mass gave us quite a soundtrack for the pre-ride briefing, and then we were off over Blackfriars bridge and into the City on our way east.
We gently rolled out of London, passing the chaos of Shoreditch at night and skirting the edges of the Olympic Park on our way up Orange Tree Hill, the highest point of the ride and offering lovely views back onto London. From there, a gentle relaxed descent took us over the M25 and into the Essex dark, reaching Tipps Cross for our halfway stop around quarter past three. As earlier this year, the caretaker had very kindly put on the urn and laid out the hall for us. Reliable halfway stops can be difficult to find, and this hall is a real gem.
Suitably fortified with cakes and snacks, we continued on to the north east and the outskirts of Chelmsford, proceeding at an unhurried pace and with no incidents of note. Heading safely back into the pre-dawn night, we turned east and then south-east to wind our way to Burnham along a series of narrow little roads. One last small climb took us over the hill and then down to our well earned breakfast.
We arrived at Peaberries Cafe on the dot of 8am, and were soon invited to park our bikes in the very generous garden and enjoy breakfast indoors or out. The food was excellent, and once suitably fortified the station was just a few hundred meters back up where we had come from. Some braver folks rode back to Wickford for the better train service instead, while I continued another five minutes along the road to the waterline proper before swinging back to pick up the train home.
